Opinions on pet water fountains for my cat?
I'm thinking about getting one of those pet fountains for my cat. She absolutely loves drinking (and playing in) running water from our tub and sinks so I think she would enjoy something like this.
I've been looking online and in pet supply catalogs, Drinkwell and Fresh Flow seem to be the popular brands. What kind do you have, and do you and your pets like it? Any suggestions on what size would be good for a cat? I'd prefer one that doesn't need the filter changed on a daily basis and is fairly easy to clean. Price is not really an issue; I just want a quality fountain.
I got a Drinkwell Fountain for cat my in December. She didn't really seem to care whether or not the water she drank was running or not before, but she'd come running whenever she heard me watering the plants. When we first got it she didn't really drink much from it for the first few weeks. But since that was her only source of water, she learned to get used to it.
The fountain is really quiet and you can only hear it if there's no other sounds. The filter is optional so if you don't want to change it just put already filtered water in. I haven't tried cleaning it yet but it comes with 3 different brushes to clean everything.

Maintaining Wall Mounted Fountains - Make the Fountain Last for Years
There are two reasons for proper maintenance of wall mounted fountains: to make them last for years, and to ensure optimal performance. While most modern fountains do not require too much maintenance, regular cleaning is a must. Here are some ways to ensure that the fountain lasts for years, and provides good service.
Ensure Even Flow
Certain wall mounted fountains give trouble because the water flow is not even in all the areas of the fountain. Instead of a sheet of water, you may see only a trickle from a spot. To ensure uniform flow, mount the fountain straight. If you find a dry area in the water flow path, wet it. This helps the water ion attract other water ions. Gradually, there will be an even, uninterrupted path of flow.
Don’t Switch It On And Off Too Frequently
A major mistake that buyers make is to turn off the fountains when they leave for work or other reasons, or go to bed. A fountain is meant to run continuously. If it is turned off too often, the pump gets damaged.
Check Water Level
The water level should be high enough to submerge the pump fully. Otherwise, the pump will become damaged. How frequently would you need to refill the tank depends on the humidity, size of the fountain, and the depth of the tank.
Cleaning The Pump
The pump collects debris and mineral deposits over a period. Every week, the owner should clean the debris from the pump. The filter collects the most dirt. Rinsing the filter with soapy water is recommended.
Cleaning The Surface
A soft brush and vinegar are enough to clean the surface of the wall fountain. Stone and steel surfaces do not need much maintenance. Rubbing vinegar on the surface using a cloth, and wiping it off using another wet cloth can bring a shine to the surface. Copper surfaces are easy to clean by using copper cleaners. However, it is better to let a film of copper oxide form on the surface. For fountains made of acrylic, use plastic cleaners.
Removing Mineral Deposits
The only way to remove calcified deposits is to use chemicals available in the market for this very purpose. These chemicals can damage the finish of the fountain, so read the instructions carefully before using them.
There are many cleaners available in the market, and this should make your job easier. Remember to change the water frequently to prevent odors and accumulation of algae. Because a wall fountain is compact in size, it is easier to clean. If you have pets at home, you may need to clean out the fount more often.
